A Story of My Diaspora

00:00 / 09:14

Although I have lived in Ottawa for four years, I do not view it as my home. My true hometown is a small village located in the south of China, where rivers run past every home. Unfortunately, due to the Chinese government's strict zero-COVID policy during the pandemic, my hometown has experienced significant humanitarian crises, making me apprehensive about returning. Whenever I stand beside the Rideau River, I am reminded of the lovely rivers in my hometown, which leave me feeling uncertain and lost, as if I am standing on the edge of an identity crisis.

An Introduction

The rhythm of Ottawa is authentic and lively, but my heart doesn't really resonate with this city.

Because I keep thinking about those rivers in my hometown and those stories that are happening on that land.

This song in the end of the audio documentary is published in 1979 when the first wave of Chinese diaspora was taking place. Today, a new wave of Chinese diaspora is going on. New stories are happening......

Do not ask me where I am from,

I come from a land far away…

Why have I left my home town

To wander far? (Wander afar)

For the free, flitting larks in the skyline

For the rush, racing streams in the creek

For those star-strewn, infinite meadows

I wander afar, wander afar.
